Where are you from?

How long have you lived in Granada, and what brought you here?
I have lived in Granada for more than 20 years, since before the turn of the last century. At that time in the UK, my mother had passed away, and I was not enjoying the work I was doing. I sold my business and came to Granada for a Spanish course. I completely fell in love with the city and its surroundings, and since then have made it my permanent home.
What do you do in Granada?
I run a 24-hour gym by the football stadium and am on the cusp of starting a new business focused on bike tourism. Our goal is to facilitate travel to the region for Europeans who want to enjoy beautiful bike riding.
Which part of the city do you live in?
I live in the Valle de Lecrín, about 30 km south of Granada, towards the coast. It’s a valley full of lemon and orange trees and an absolutely beautiful place to live.
What do you like most about Granada?
I really like the relaxed atmosphere. People here work to live, they don’t live to work.
What would you say you like the least?
As a business owner, I do find the local bureaucracy to be quite challenging. Also, in the middle of the summer, there is often some pollution that hovers right above Granada.
What is your favorite local activity?
That would definitely be riding my bike. As an enthusiast, Granada is like a biking playground for me. You can cycle up to the ski resorts, on flatter grounds, or even around the city. I just love it!
What is your favorite restaurant?
At the current moment, that would have to be a Japanese restaurant by the name of Masae. The owner herself is Japanese and is also the head chef. She is very welcoming and personal, and of course, cooks some really good food.
What is your favorite tapas bar?
Los Diamantes on Calle Navas.
What is one tip you would give someone visiting Granada?
Make time to visit the Alhambra and to wander around the Albaicín.
