TOBIAS HILBEL

Locals are often the best source of information. In each edition of the StayLonger Guide, we feature a short Q&A with an expat who has made Granada heir home and ask them their own perspective on the city along with helpful recommendations.

Germany

I came to Granada for the first time in 2016 while I was working in Almería for the Plataforma Solar de Almería, and this is where I met my future wife. We moved to Granada permanently in 2019.

I am an electrical engineer and part of the German engineering team at Greening Group here in Granada. The company, which focuses on renewable energy, was founded locally in 2011 and employs many people of various nationalities.

My family and I spend the winter months in the city center and summers in Churriana de La Vega, which is just outside the city.

I would have to say tapas and all of the local options for outdoor activities. For example, in Granada, one does not have to choose between the mountains and the sea, both are at your fingertips. There are also a lot of activities we can enjoy together as a family with our newborn daughter, Giulia. Finally, there are many cultural activities that take place in the city. There is a lot to like about Granada!

The month of August, when it gets very hot in the city and beaches are quite busy. But on the other hand, the mountains always offer a reprieve from both—the summer heat and the crowds.

I am part of the local underwater rugby team here in Granada, which was started last year. I had never heard of this sport before, it is quite exotic and uncommon. I really enjoy it as you can burn a lot of energy and stress, and since it’s underwater, there is very little risk of injury. Playing an underwater sport is also great training so that in the summer I can explore the underwater world through snorkeling in La Herradura or Playa Rijana, just past Calahonda, which I also enjoy doing very much.

We usually skip formal restaurants and take advantage of the city’s tapas bar scene. If I had to name one, it would be Carmen el Agua in the Albaicín.

We love La Taberna de Fany in Churriana de la Vega. It’s super local, very affordable and they serve great tapas. For a place right in the city center, I’d recommend Minotauro.

If you are here for a short visit, make sure you explore the neighborhoods of Albaicín and Sacromonte, and definitely stop at the Mirador de San Nicolas viewing point

  • Restaurante Carmen el Agua at Placeta del Aljibe de Trillo, 7
  • Minotauro Tapas at Calle Imprenta, 6
  • La Taberna de Fany at Carretera de Alhama, 88

Perhaps at no other time of the year is there a greater contrast in Granada than between August and September. The summer heat, at its strongest during the month of August, makes for a sleepy month in the city. Most locals spend it on the…
